New York has established a new and convenient way of finding lawyers to handle different legal issues like writing a will, child custody, and handling criminal matters. A new portal to be accessed by those searching for lawyers has been put in place by the Trusted Lawyer Referral and Information Service of New York State Bar Association in partnership with Legal.io. This minimizes pressure for distressed citizens who are seeking legal attention.

The system works by  filling out a questionnaire that confidentially describes their location and legal issues. The state bar then forwards the request to the relevant country bar association if the person lives in one of the seventeen countries that have a local lawyer referral service. These referrals are free but there is a fee of $35 for the first thirty minutes of consultation with a referred attorney. Exceptional cases that involve employee’s compensation, social security, unemployment, personal injury, and medical malpractice are not charged. The individual is obliged to retain the lawyer after initial consultation. ‘The New York State Bar Association Lawyer Referral and Information Service’ has for the last thirty five years matched individuals with attorneys.

Elena Jaffe reports that the new technology helps attorneys to serve more clients than they would without the referrals. She further confessed that ‘The Lawyer Referral and Information Service’ has helped her to grow her practice remarkably, despite being in practice for more than ten years, the new invention according to her is the best way to find clients.

The Larkin and Lacey Frontera fund was established by Jim together with Larkin. The main aim of the fund was to help support groups that advocate for human, migrant and civil rights not forgetting the right to free speech and also the right to allow civic participation in states such as Arizona including the border with Mexico.

According to the founders, they were motivated o set up the fund after they had received a settlement of $3.75 million due to wrongful arrest by a Sheriff of Maricopa County on October 18, 2007. The two journalists had been forcefully detained in the middle of the night without noticed and jailed. Learn more about Michael Lacey: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/mike-lacey/

Their jailing was because they had revealed the existence of secret grand jury proceedings that wanted the reporters notes on the articles they had produced about the Sheriff. To further worsen the case, the grand jury had subpoenas demanding the revelation of the names of citizens who had read the New Times stories online.

They later won a suit they had launched against the county in the United States Court of Appeal.
